Setting up a communication system in a residence or business begins with the cable that connects all of the subsystems to each other. Structured cabling design and installation is governed by a set of industry standards for data or voice communications using various kinds of cable, most commonly category 3 (CAT-3), category 5e (CAT-5e), category 6 (CAT-6), fiber optic cable and modular connections. These standards characterize the various cabling topologies for specific applications, and typically connect to and from a central distribution or “patch” panel.
