Your business is in peril; there’s a phone line down! How are you supposed to get anything done now? You don’t even know what the problem is. Getting a professional into your business and having them go over your phone system can take hours; that’s hours of lost profits.

First, we’d like to correct the notion that professional help is always a hassle. For example, Central Telephone can often do maintenance work remotely on our cloud-based phone systems, and we pride ourselves on our efficient and intelligent on-site maintenance procedures. However, we do understand that time is of the essence when it comes to small business phone system repairs. For the convenience of phone system users everywhere, we’ve compiled a quick list of troubleshooting tips below that can fix a few common phone problems.

Have You Tried Unplugging it and Plugging it Back in?

No, we don’t mean to sound preachy, and no, we don’t mean the entire system! When it comes to small business phone systems, sometimes the right wiring solutions can be simple resets, reboots, or an easy change of cords. In the right circumstances, this can fix such terrifying problems as:

●        Not being able to hear out of your phone at all. This could be due to a degrading of the wire of the individual phone set. Consider changing out the parts that can unplug, or simply unplugging them and plugging them back in. If this is a continuous problem, a headset or wireless phone can easily remedy it.

●        Noisy phone lines. Is it impossible to hear over the static or hissing coming from your phone? An issue at the source of your phone network could be to blame. Locate your network’s demarcation point—where your private phone network turns into the public one (the line managed by your telecommunications company). Locate the marked line of the phone set having problems and unplug it, then plug in an analog phone for testing purposes. If the line is still noisy, then it’s the problem of your telecommunications company, but if you now can hear just fine, there’s a problem with your phone system, and it needs professional attention.

●        A completely inoperable phone. Replace the jack between the phone and the wall (which often costs only 5 dollars or so) and see if the phone lights up. If a simple fix doesn’t work, it might be time to contact a professional.
